چکیده

A workshop was held in the framework of the ACCENT (Atmospheric Composition Change – a European Network) Joint Research Programme on “Aerosols” and the Programme on “Access to Laboratory Data”. The aim of the workshop was to hold “Gordon Conference” type discussion covering accommodation and reactive uptake of water vapour and trace pollutant gases on condensed phase atmospheric materials. The scope was to review and define the current state of knowledge of accommodation coefficients for water vapour on water droplet and ice surfaces, and uptake of trace gas species on a variety of different surfaces characteristic of the atmospheric condensed phase particulate matter and cloud droplets. Twenty-six scientists participated in this Correspondence to: C. E. Kolb ([email protected]) meeting through presentations, discussions and the development of a consensus review. In this review we present an analysis of the state of knowledge on the thermal and mass accommodation coefficient for water vapour on aqueous droplets and ice and a survey of current state-of the-art of reactive uptake of trace gases on a range of liquid and solid atmospheric droplets and particles. The review recommends consistent definitions of the various parameters that are needed for quantitative representation of the range of gas/condensed surface kinetic processes important for the atmosphere and identifies topics that require additional research. Global Monitoring of Atmospheric Trace Gases, Clouds and Aerosols from UV/vis/NIR Satellite Instruments: Currents Status and Near Future Perspectives

A new generation of UV / vis / near-IR satellite instruments like GOME (since 1995), SCIAMACHY (since 2002), OMI (since 2004), and GOME-2 (since 2006) allows to measure several important stratospheric and tropospheric trace gases like O3, NO2, OCIO, HCHO, SO2, BrO, and H2O as well as clouds and aerosols from space. Because of its extended spectral range, the SCIAMACHY instrument also allows the...

Solubility data requirements and new experimental methods in atmospheric aerosol research

The uptake of trace gases by atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets plays a critical role in the atmospheric chemistry of both the troposphere and stratosphere. The transfer of gaseous species through the interfacial boundary layer and into the liquid phase involves a number of closely entwined processes, including: gas phase diffusion, mass accommodation, evaporation, Henry's law solubility, ...

Atmospheric brown clouds: impacts on South Asian climate and hydrological cycle.

South Asian emissions of fossil fuel SO(2) and black carbon increased approximately 6-fold since 1930, resulting in large atmospheric concentrations of black carbon and other aerosols. This period also witnessed strong negative trends of surface solar radiation, surface evaporation, and summer monsoon rainfall. These changes over India were accompanied by an increase in atmospheric stability an...

Heterogeneous Chemistry and Tropospheric Ozone

Ozone is produced in the troposphere by gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and CO catalyzed by hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx ≡ OH + H + peroxy radicals) and nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx ≡ NO+NO2). Heterogeneous chemistry involving reactions in aerosol particles and cloud droplets may affect O3 concentrations in a number of ways including production and loss of HOx and NOx, direct loss of O3, an...

Lossless Data Compression for Infrared Hyperspectral Sounders - An Overview

Hyperspectral sounding data requires accuracy for useful retrieval of atmospheric temperature, moisture, trace gases, clouds, aerosols and surface properties. Therefore, compression of hyperspectral sounding data is better to be lossless or near lossless. Given the large volume of three-dimensional hyperspectral data that will be generated by the hyperspectral sounders such as AIRS, CrIS, IASI,...
